Gold trading overview

Gold is a widely traded precious metal and traditional safe-haven, valued both as an investment and for its industrial uses. Mined on every continent except Antarctica, gold has been used for millennia as currency, jewellery, and a store of value, and continues to play a key role in modern finance as a hedge against inflation, deflation, or currency devaluation.

Its price is influenced by factors such as inflation, interest rates, the strength of the US dollar, geopolitical events, and global economic conditions. Gold is also used in industries ranging from medicine and electronics to windshields and catalysts, reflecting its practical applications.

Traded in forms such as bullion, coins, and derivatives, gold can be monitored in real time using a live chart and accessed through CFDs.

Trading gold CFDs involves speculating on the price movement of the precious metal without taking ownership of it. You’re able to open a long (buy) position if you predict the price will increase in value, or a short (sell) position if you predict the price will decline in value.

Gold CFDs are traded on margin using leverage, allowing you to gain greater market exposure with only a small amount of capital, known as margin.

/

Gold opens on Sunday at 23:01 and trades until Friday 21:58 (GMT+1), with daily trading breaks between 22:00 - 23:01.

/

With Trade Nation, leverage levels for retail clients vary by market, in line with regulations:

  • Forex: up to 30:1
  • Gold: up to 20:1
  • Indices: up to 20:1
  • Stocks: up to 5:1
  • Bonds: up to 5:1
  • Oil: up to 10:1
  • Other commodities: up to 10:1

Leverage allows you to gain full market exposure with a smaller upfront margin, but it also increases risk. Losses can exceed your initial deposit, so it’s important to use risk-management tools such as stop losses when trading CFDs on Trade Nation.

No. Trade Nation does not charge commissions across its CFD markets, including forex, stocks, indices, commodities, bonds and oil.

All trading costs are built into transparent, fixed spreads, so you know your costs upfront with no hidden fees or surprise charges.

For cash (rolling) CFD positions held overnight, a low-cost financing charge may apply after the market close:

Long positions: the relevant interbank rate plus 2.5%

Short positions: if the interbank rate is below 2.5%, a net charge applies; if it’s above 2.5%, you may receive a credit

Futures-based CFDs are not subject to overnight financing.

The risk indicator assumes that you may not be able to buy or sell your CFD at the price you wanted due to volatility of the market or you have to buy or sell your CFD
at a price that significantly impacts how much you get back. There is no recommended or minimum holding period for this product. You must maintain sufficient margin in your account to keep your positions open. Trading on margin means you could quickly lose the amount invested.

CFDs (Contracts for Difference) are packaged retail investment products (PRIIPs) within the meaning of Regulation (EU) No 1286/2014. They are complex derivative instruments: you do not own the underlying asset.

CFDs are leveraged, which means that small price movements can lead to large losses. Prices can change rapidly, including outside trading hours. Exchange rate fluctuations also affect your results. Trade Nation Europe is the counterparty to your trades, so you are exposed to the risk of the firm defaulting. Spreads, overnight financing costs and other charges reduce your return. Technical failures may delay or prevent the execution of orders.

To protect retail investors, and pursuant to Article 2 of CMVM Regulation No. 5/2019, Trade Nation Europe provides the following protections:

  • Leverage limits: Leverage ranges from 30:1 to 2:1, depending on the underlying asset.
  • Margin close-out: Positions are closed out when the funds in your account, plus unrealised profits, fall to 50% of the initial margin required.
  • Negative balance protection: You will never lose more than the funds deposited in your CFD account, although you may lose them in full.
  • No incentives: No bonuses, payments or other benefits are offered in connection with CFD trading.

Before investing, read the Key Information Document (KID) for each CFD. The KID sets out the product's features, risks, costs and performance scenarios. KIDs are available, in Portuguese

The legal stuff

CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 75,8% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
